Report: Hawks plan to be aggressive in free agency

Sam Amick released some surprising news surrounding the Atlanta Hawks. However, when you think about it, it makes a good deal of sense.

Amick reported that the Hawks plan to be aggressive with free agents this offseason because of the advanced progression from John Collins and Trae Young. The Hawks’ problem in the past has been a lack of star power. If they can sell one of the high-end free agents on their young core, they could potentially have three stars, something they have not sniffed landing for a decade.

If this report is accurate, and the team is successful in making a splash, it would signal an early end to their rebuild that began just two seasons ago. The Hawks have shown promise despite what the standings say, and the rise to stardom of youngsters Collins and Young has seemingly changed the culture of a team. They have $41 million in cap this season – enough to reel in a free agent and should free up over $30 million after next season when Kent Bazemore and Miles Plumlee expire. Oh, and they are projected to have two lottery picks this season.

The list of potential free agents this offseason includes Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker, Demarcus Cousins, Jimmy Butler, and Tobias Harris.

Travis Schlenk may see his window opening to win now with Collins and Young on rookie contracts playing at a high level. It will be interesting to see what the Hawks do this offseason because it could range from signing a star to absorbing cap for more picks and staying in rebuild mode. This offseason will be make or break for Atlanta in many ways.
