Falcons to have top 30 visit with potential top draft pick

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 31 Reese s Senior Bowl

It’s officially draft season for the NFL, and the Falcons are in a prime position to add another blue chip prospect as they own the 8th pick for the third consecutive cycle.

Most mock drafts have Atlanta landing the top defender, whether that’s Dallas Turner, Laiatu Latu, or Jared Verse. However, I wouldn’t rule out other prospects because Terry Fontenot has been a consistent proponent of drafting the best player available.

That could be Malik Naber or Rome Odunze, even though Atlanta has already signed Darnell Mooney. It also includes the possibility of another potential top defender like Quinyon Mitchell, who is taking a top 30 visit with the Falcons this week.

This is the perfect example of a prospect that is going to continue to gain steam as the draft approaches.

Mitchell is only the second Toledo player to earn All-America honors in back-to-back seasons, having set school records for passes defended in a season (25) and career (52). As the draft approaches, Falcons fans will hear more about this kid.

Though everyone continues to point to Verse, Latu, or Turner as the “right” choice for the club because it’s a need, don’t forget about cornerback. It’s not as pressing of a need as edge, but it’s a close second.

A.J. Terrell needs a running-mate, and at the very least, Atlanta’s defense needs a starting-caliber cornerback in the room with Dee Alford, Clark Phillips, and Mike Hughes.

In today’s NFL, defenses need three starting corners as most deploy nickel packages as base defenses. The Falcons are no different.

Quinyon Mitchell would be a hell of an addition to the Falcons defense.
