Are the Falcons worried about Deion Jones?

The Falcons had numerous players go down Thursday night with an injury. Most notably, they lost Keanu Neal for the season with a torn ACL. One of those other injuries was sustained by Deion Jones, which has to make the stomachs of Falcons fans everywhere turn.

If there was anything serious, it did not appear to affect Jones. He re-entered the game, led the team in tackles and recorded an interception. However, the Falcons did make an interesting addition on Monday, signing inside linebacker Corey Nelson.

Dan Quinn also acknowledged that he held Deion Jones out of practice Monday with a sore foot.

Now, a sore foot sounds harmless, but these type of injuries can be nagging and sometimes even season-ending. It is also even less assuring considering Quinn stated that he believed Keanu Neal’s injury was nothing to worry about. Of course, that turned out to be a torn ACL.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jones was the highest rated player on the Falcons’ defense in week one. It is clear he is taking the next steps towards being an elite middle linebacker. Losing him for any significant amount of time would be a gigantic blow, and there has to be some concern, or Atlanta would not have made this move.

Nelson most recently spent a little time with the Philadelphia Eagles. His most notable experience came with Denver, where he played in 53 games registering 104 total tackles. Whether he plays or not likely depends on the health of Jones. Hopefully, it will be a very limited amount, if any.
