The Braves have several candidates set to receive their 2021 contracts with MLB’s tender deadline less than six hours away, and just minutes ago, they reached their first agreement with utility man Johan Camargo, who agreed to a one-year, $1.36 million contract.Â

Many believed the Braves may choose to non-tender Camargo, allowing him to become a free agent. He’s been a shell of the player he was in 2018 when he posted a WAR above three. In 2019, Camargo was demoted to Gwinnett in the middle of the season. He was re-called briefly before fracturing his shin, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. And last year, Camargo again found himself demoted from the major-league squad after hitting just .200 in 35 games.Â
However, at the end of the day, the price for the depth that he provides was too enticing. MLB Trade Rumors projected Camargo to settle for around $2 million. Obviously, he ended up taking a lot less, which could be the case for many of these arbitration candidates because of the financial impact of the coronavirus. I expect the Braves to continue to give Camargo chances to solidify himself in the majors, but if he continues to struggle in 2021, it will probably be his last opportunity in Atlanta.Â
