Can the Dream become a reality?

The Atlanta Dream got as far as the Eastern Conference Finals before they were defeated by the Washington Mystics, 3-2. That postseason success all came without one of their star players, Angel McCoughtry, who tore her ACL shortly before the playoffs began. Like most Atlanta franchises, losing in the postseason has become a reality for the Dream since their formation in 2008. They have been a thriving organization; they just haven’t done enough to win that ever-elusive championship.

As the 2019 season approaches, head coach Nicki Collen will be heading into her 2nd year with the team. She won Coach of the Year as a rookie. After acquiring Phoenix Mercury center Marie Gulich, Maite Carzola, and Li Yueru during the 2019 WNBA draft, the roster looks to be set for preseason.

The Atlanta Dream are a deep squad led by all-star Tiffany Hayes who has improved mightly each season since being forced to take on a leadership role in McCoughtry’s absence. McCoughtry took the year off in 2017 to nurse injuries, forcing Tiffany Hayes to put the team on her back.

When McCoughtry returns, the duo of her and Hayes will be among the most talked about in the league, but will they be enough to put the Dream over the top? Well, they might not have to be. The Dream recently added the likes of Renee Montgomery, Jessica Breland, and Alex Bentley; which should add a cumulative veteran presence to this squad.

The Dream have all the tools to get it done. Now, it’s only a matter of making it happen. Let’s all support our women this year and attend their home opener May 24th versus the Dallas Wings.
