I will continue to harp on the most important thing about training camp and preseason games, which is for teams to get to Week 1 as healthy as possible. Carl Lawson‘s unfortunate season-ending injury should serve as a stark reminder for Falcons fans begging Terry Fontenot and Arthur Smith to play the starters in the preseason.

Lawson sustained a ruptured Achilles and will miss the entire 2021 season. He’s racked up 20 career sacks in 51 games over four seasons with the Bengals and signed with the Jets this offseason. Lawson led all defensive linemen with 32 QB hits last year, and his 54 QB hits over the past two seasons trail only Joey Bosa among defensive linemen. He was arguably New York’s most significant addition this offseason, and now, Robert Salah’s defense will be without a critical piece.

Lawson’s injury occurred during joint practices with the Packers last week as he participated in a 12-on-12 session. Even though the injury didn’t occur during a preseason game, it is a reminder that injuries happen all the time in the NFL, and taking unnecessary snaps in preseason games presents more opportunity for injury to strike.
