Georgia Football’s Top Recruit on Preseason Freshman All-American Team

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 06 Missouri at Georgia

Kirby Smart has built a monster in Athens, recruiting and developing at the highest levels. Georgia football brought in the No. 2 ranked class for the 2023 cycle, and the top recruit was Damon Wilson, who landed on the On3 preseason freshman All-American Team.

“Damon Wilson is one of the best pass rushers in the 2023 cycle. Guy who has a unique combination of flexibility and strength. One of the most athletic pass rushers. Exceptional bend, plays the run well, and one who I think will help Georgia as the attempt to replace a guy like Nolan Smith.

“I think he brings some juice off the end for the Bulldogs. … Given his development, both physically and technically, I think he has the potential to make an impact as a freshman. On a team and a roster where it’s not a given you’re going to see a bunch of blue-chip freshman and underclassmen play, given how deep Georgia is,” Power described.

Wilson chose the Dawgs over the Ohio State Buckeyes, and it’s looking like he’s going to make an impact immediately as he displayed in the spring game.

“The sooner they get ready, the better we’re going to be,” Kirby Smart said of Wilson and 5-star defensive tackle Jordan Hall. “Becuase we’re going to need both those guys to step up and play. They’re just young. It’s okay to be young. They have a ways to go and I think they’ll get there. I think both of those guys will contribute and help us next season.

Malaki Starks and Mykel Williams contributed as true freshmen, and there’s no reason Damon Wilson can’t either. Obviously, at a program like Georgia, first-year players aren’t given anything. Wilson will likely be in a supplemental role, getting snaps as a pass rusher, but the sky is the limit.

“He does have ability. He has some pass-rush ability,” Smart said in April. “He’s going to be a really good football player if he decides he’s going to work at it. It’s not going to come as easy as maybe it did in high school. You’re rushing against Amarius Mims, you’re rushing against Earnest Greene, (Austin) Blaske, you know, some really good tackles. He hasn’t faced people like that.”

Georgia football is the top dawg in the country, and it’s because of high level recruits like Damon Wilson continuing to flood Athens.
