Giants waive former Falcons third-round pick Jalen Mayfield

NFL: OCT 08 Giants at Dolphins

According to Aaron Wilson, the Giants have waived former Falcons third-round pick Jalen Mayfield.

New York has dealt with a slew of injuries along the offensive line this season. Shorthanded, the Giants were forced to make a couple of practice squad elevations for their game against the Dolphins last week, and Mayfield was one of them.

With starting left tackle Andrew Thomas, starting center John Michael Schmitz, and reserve interior lineman Shane Lemieux ruled out, Jalen Mayfield was once again thrust into a starting role. It went exactly how Falcons fans expected.

Mayfield literally graded out at 0.0 in PFF’s pass blocking grade; I didn’t even think that was possible. His journey hasn’t gone how he imagined, and it might be the end of the line for him.

The 2021 third-round pick was initially forced into the starting lineup as a rookie, where he struggled mightily, and that may be an understatement. Coming into this season, his standing with the Falcons was unclear.

Atlanta spent a second-round pick on Syracuse tackle Matthew Bergeron, who everyone expected to kick inside to left guard. In the preseason, Mayfield didn’t look any better, particularly in pass protection.

Eventually, the Falcons waived him, which is when the Giants signed the former Michigan tackle to their practice squad. Now, he’s once again looking for a place to call home.
