Is turmoil brewing with Falcons upcoming opponent?

NFL: DEC 03 Panthers at Buccaneers

The Falcons are set to host the Buccaneers this Sunday in Atlanta as they attempt to take a stranglehold on the division.

Though the club sits atop the NFC South with a perfect 3-0 record, Tampa Bay could actually vault into first place with a victory.

The Bucs sit at 5-7 and 2-1 in the division while the Falcons own a 6-6 record. Tampa would be tied with Atlanta in every category, except for one — conference record. Both clubs currently sit with a 4-4 record against NFC opponents, which would currently be the tiebreaker.

On the flip side, the Falcons can extend their lead in the division to 4-0 and could lose both of their remaining games to the Saints and Panthers and still win the NFC South.

This is a prime opportunity to step on the throats of their divisional foes. The Bucs have lost six of their last eight games, and Todd Bowles’ team might be having an internal rift.

In response to Bowles’ reasoning as to why her husband didn’t record a single catch against the Panthers last week, Chris Godwin’s wife took to Instagram to call Tampa’s head coach a blatant liar.

“We were subbing him out a lot,” Bowles said. “Obviously, he’s a little nicked up, so he’s not totally 100 percent. Nobody is, but he is probably banged up more than most …”

I’m not sure why we are just blatantly lying here,” Mariah Godwin wrote on Instagram. “Regardless of how banged up Chris is,” she continued, “he continues to work his (butt) off and hasn’t missed a game. … Continues to run great routes and get open. . . .

“I don’t know why things are the way they are, this isn’t my team to coach. but this lying on Chris on implying negativity on his work ethic is infuriating. Let’s not act like he had to be subbed out so much more than usual when in fact he’s been playing just the same.”

Without taking sides on this one, I’m here to stoke the fire for the Falcons’ benefit. Godwin has 53 catches for 606 yards but only one receiving touchdown this season. This in-fighting could force the Bucs into uncomfortable situations where they’re focused on their own house more so than their opponents.

The Falcons need to take advantage.
