Patriots legend glad the Falcons didn’t hire Bill Belichick

NFL: JUL 30 New England Patriots Training Camp

As Raheem Morris rounds out his coaching staff, more information is revealed about the Falcons, Bill Belichick saga.

In summary, Arthur Blank wanted to hire the architect of the Patriot Way but didn’t want all of the other baggage associated with it — i.e., front office overhaul, Belichick’s short tenure, etc. There was also internal pushback from Blank’s confidants.

The idea of bringing Belichick to Atlanta brought polar opposite opinions from Falcons fans. Some were just as enamored as Blank, while others convulsed even thinking about the scenario.

I’ve made my thoughts known. I hated the idea of the Falcons hiring Bill Belichick, and a Patriots legend shared similar sentiments. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t really want to see him go to Atlanta,” Devin McCourty said about Belichick during an episode of the Eye on Foxborough podcast, via MassLive.

“I think Atlanta was a chance to break (Shula’s) record, no doubt about it, but I just didn’t think Atlanta would be a year or two away from really competing in the Super Bowl…whereas, who knows if there’s a team that comes up in the next year, you bring Bill Belichick in there, and this team automatically becomes a contender.”

I couldn’t agree with McCourty more. The timelines between the two sides never made sense. The Falcons aren’t a coach away from competing for Super Bowls, even if it is the greatest coach of all time.

Atlanta doesn’t need a two or three-year fix like Belichick would’ve provided. The Falcons need a long-term solution at the head coach and quarterback positions. Belichick presented a short-term plan for Blank to “go for it” before the franchise’s owner got any older.

The fact is the roster isn’t in the place to do that. Clubs like the Eagles, Cowboys, or even the Chiefs (if Andy Reid retired) would be better fits because they’re competing for Super Bowls in 2024 and beyond. The Falcons are not.
