Quinn: Brandon Powell is “leader in clubhouse” for returner job

It is often an overlooked need this time of year, but the Falcons will have to find a return specialist for the 2020 season. As of right now, Brandon Powell is the frontrunner for the job, per head coach Dan Quinn:

Powell signed as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions back in 2018 and was cut after the 2019 preseason. Days later, he joined the Falcons and was promoted to the active roster in November.

We have not had an opportunity to see what Powell is capable of yet, but with Barner and Hardy no longer in Atlanta, a new man will be returning kicks in 2020. Powell was used sparingly in the role during his college days at Florida, but I would bet the Falcons attempt to find a speedy wide receiver/running back in the draft to add some competition. In my most recent mock draft, I selected former Virginia wide receiver Joe Reed for quality depth and returning purposes. He returned five kicks for touchdowns in college.
