Rece Davis giving Kirby Smart, Georgia football bulletin board material

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 02 Rose Bowl Game

The Associated Press recently released their Top 25 Poll this week, and Georgia sat atop as the #1`team in the country following back-to-back national championships.

It’s pretty hard to argue with the track record, but there’s at least one media pundit doing just that. College Gameday host Rece Davis doesn’t believe the Dawgs should be on top to start the season. Appearing on SportsCenter, Davis hedged, giving respect to Georgia, while also expressing concerns about the quarterback situation.

“Quarterback and it’s not that they don’t have talented guys, Carson Beck likely the starter,” Davis said. “I was told by someone close to the Georgia program just a couple of days ago that Brock Vandagriff has been really terrific in fall camp. So they’ve got a couple of talented options but they’re unproven.”

At one point, we had these same discussions about Stetson Bennett, who cannot hold a candle to Carson Beck physically. The latter has a cannon of an arm. Obviously, it takes more than a big arm to run Mike Bobo‘s offense, but it also doesn’t take a future first overall pick.

Beck’s supporting cast is arguably the best in the nation. The receiving core is led by unanimous All-American Brock Bowers along with preseason All-American Sedrick Van Pran anchoring the line of scrimmage at center.

Rece Davis had the back-to-back reigning Big Ten champions, Michigan, as the country’s #1 team in the preseason. However, as stated before, Davis hedges, stating that if Georgia can hold up against Ole Miss and Tennesse, the path to another CFP appearance is within reach.

“While I don’t have them ranked No. 1 to start in the preseason poll, I have Michigan on top, it’s not unreasonable to think that Georgia is just going to reload,” Davis said. “The schedule suggests that they really only have 2 games that they could even find a way to give away over the course of the regular season.”

Kirby Smart is doing his damnedest to keep his program hungry, telling them through the media after the Bulldogs’ first scrimmage that they haven’t done anything. Thankfully, he doesn’t have to make up motivation; Rece Davis is giving it to his team on a silver platter.
