Report reveals which Hawks All-Star the Pelicans prefer in a trade

NBA: JAN 08 Hawks at Clippers

The Hawks are approaching a pivotal offseason with many expecting Trae Young or Dejounte Murray to be traded this Summer.

Landry Fields and Quin Snyder will have to not only weigh which All-Star point guard is the best fit for Atlanta, but they’ll also have to consider the potential trade market for each player and who they could better build a team around.

It might not be up to the Hawks, either. Reports surfaced that some NBA executives prefer Dejounte Murray over Trae Young. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, “Several executives who spoke with HoopsHype say they value Murray over Young due to his contract length and average annual salary.”

Murray’s length and two-way ability are more desirable for the position, and his contract is much more team-friendly compared to his counterpart. Young’s dynamic offensive ability is his strongest asset, but it seems that’s not enough.

Now, it’s not just anonymous execs. We have a club that does prefer Murray over Young; according to Christian Clark of Nola.com, the Pelicans seemingly hold more interest in Murray.

“Even though Young is the more talented player, the Pelicans seem to hold more interest in Murray, league sources said.”

With Dejounte Murray standing 6-foot-5 and making $25.5 million next season, it’s not exactly shocking that New Orleans prefers him over a 6-foot-1 Trae Young who is owed $43 million.

Moreover, it would cost an acquiring team less to trade for Murray compared to Young, and he’s a more versatile point guard. It doesn’t make him the better player, though. That’s not even a conversation I’m willing to entertain.
