The Hawks defense took a huge blow Thursday afternoon with reports coming forth saying Thabo Sefolosha is to miss the rest of the season with a broken ankle. The injury stems from the incident early Wednesday morning in which Sefolosha was arrested along with Hawks Center Pero Antic. They reportedly refused to let the police set up a crime scene when Pacers Forward Chris Copeland was stabbed outside of a bar. Amongst Sefolosha’s misdemeanor charges was resisting arrest, as apparently it took four officers to put him in cuffs. He was seen limping on video as he left the police station yesterday afternoon. It goes without saying that this is a huge embarrassment as well as a huge blow to the Hawks. Full details are yet to emerge, but if Thabo and Pero are truly responsible for this incident, that is behavior that is extremely detrimental to their teammates. While many NBA players go to clubs, they had just gotten off of a flight for a back-to-back. Atlanta’s second unit played at a whole different level defensively when Thabo was healthy, and he would have been a big part of the Hawks’ playoff rotation. Expect an expanded role in the playoffs for Kent Bazemore and John Jenkins, who saw more playing time when Sefolosha was injured this season. One has to wonder if this incident, as well as Mike Muscala’s good play as of late, could spell a reduced role for Pero Antic as well. We will keep you updated on this developing story here at SportsTalkATL.com.

UPDATE: Contrary to initial reports, it is now being reported that Thabo broke his tibia rather than his ankle. There are also conflcting reports that he may have fractured his fibula. Wait for further updates.

UPDATE: 9:12 ET: Thabo suffered a broken tibia as well as ligament damage. He will have to undergo surgery.
