Adam Schefter says it would be a “surprise” if Falcons traded for Justin Fields right now

NFL: SEP 10 Packers at Bears

This time of the year is filled with smoke screens, and it’s never easy to sift through what’s real and what’s fake, but a report from Adam Schefter is always a safe thing to bet on. The Falcons have been the most talked about team when it comes to Bears quarterback Justin Fields, but add Schefter to the group of NFL insiders that is skeptical.

“There’s been a lot of speculation on Atlanta,” Schefter said, via On3.com. “I think Atlanta will be something of a surprise right now to trade for Justin Fields. There’s been some conversation about the Pittsburgh Steelers, maybe something can be figured out there.

“The Las Vegas Raiders might have some interest, but there’s not this huge number of teams lined up to trade for Justin Fields as the Bears look to find a home for him before free agency begins in about 10 days.”

Despite some believing the Falcons are the favorites to land Justin Fields, the most plugged-in NFL insiders don’t seem to buy it. Recently, Steve Wyche reported that he doesn’t see Fields to Atlanta as a top option either.

“I don’t see it,” Wyche said.

“The Falcons, their new coordinator Zac Robinson is coming from LA. Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford, that scheme does not fit Justin Fields, right?” Wyche added.

There are some enticing aspects about Justin Fields. He’d put butts in seats, seems to have plenty of untapped potential, and is still very young. If it worked, Fields would fix the Falcons quarterback position for the next decade-plus. However, the trade compensation, contract situation, and fit in Zac Robinson’s offense are clear concerns.

I do believe the Falcons have had conversations with the Bears about a potential trade, but like Schefter, I would be surprised if Justin Fields was traded to Atlanta anytime soon, or at all for that matter. Moving up in the draft or signing a veteran like Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield seems to be their Plan A and B.
