Braves add another arm to the 26-man roster

Braves roster moves

With Allan Winans being optioned following yesterday’s game, the Braves had an open roster spot and they have filled it with another young arm in Darius Vines.

The 25-year-old Vines is a much more highly touted prospect than Winans, coming in at #14 on MLB.com’s list of the Braves top 30 prospects (Winans is #25).

Vines dealt with an injury early last season, but when he made his return to Gwinnett, he was lights out, boasting a 2.36 ERA over 34.1 innings. The performance was enough to earn him a shot on the big-league club, and he performed well over five appearances, recording a 3.98 ERA in 20.1 innings.

We’ll see how the Braves elect to use Vines. He could just be a placeholder for someone else to give the team some extra depth in relief in case some of their starters don’t give them length. But if he isn’t used, he very well could be next in line for a start in place of Spencer Strider. In two starts this year for the Stripers, Vines owns a 3.75 ERA over 12 innings with 11 strikeouts.
