Braves Report: Max Fried could return sooner than expected

Earlier today, Braves beat writer Mark Bowman for MLB.com had some encouraging news regarding Kyle Wright. He’s set to throw off the mound for the first time on Friday and begin bullpen sessions next week. However, Bowman’s promising insight did not stop there; he also revealed Max Fried is scheduled to throw five innings tomorrow for the Stripers, which could put him in line to start for the Braves sometime next week.

To this point, Max Fried has yet to throw more than 35 pitches in a rehab start, but I imagine he’s been stretching out behind the scenes for quite some time. If he is able to complete five innings tomorrow and more importantly, toss around 75 pitches, it’s very possible he returns to the Braves next week.

Rather than the number of innings Fried completes, I’ll be dialed into his pitch count. If he only throws around 50-60 pitches, it’s hard to imagine the Braves will rush him to the majors. He’ll probably need at least one more rehab start. But if he is allowed to throw 70+, expect him to be in Boston next week. Regardless, the ace of the Braves staff is nearing a return.
