According to Zach Klein of WSB, the Atlanta Falcons will open the 2023 season at home against 1st overall pick Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers.

This is the second leak of the schedule before the official release Thursday evening. The first came to us from the team’s Twitter, revealing the Falcons will travel across the pond to face the Jaguars in London, the second international contest in three seasons for the Dirty Birds.

Now, we know the Falcons will open the 2023 season at home, which they also did in 2022 against a divisional opponent. Instead of the Saints, it will be the Panthers this year, and Falcons fans should be excited for several reasons.

Most importantly, opening a season at home is always special. Mercedes-Benz Stadium should be rocking.

The fan base has legit expectations this season after two underwhelming campaigns as the club worked to get out from underneath their dead cap. The roster is in a better state now than any other under the new regime, and I would go as far as to say not making the playoffs would be disappointing.

Secondly, the Falcons draw Bryce Young in Week 1 unless, of course, the Panthers decide to roll with Andy Dalton, which would surprise me. Let’s assume Carolina does the smart thing and starts Young.

The 1st overall selection from last month’s draft will surely be a star in this league, but Atlanta will get the first crack at the former Heisman Trophy winner. Rookie quarterbacks often have difficulty transitioning; this should be an excellent opportunity for the Falcons to start the year 1-0.
