Falcons: Could quarterbacks go 1-4 in the NFL Draft?

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 08 CFP National Championship Michigan vs Washington

The hot topic of conversation in Atlanta sports is the Falcons quarterback situation. Everybody wants to know who will be under center in 2024, and in the next week or so, that could be answered.

From all the reports, it seems Kirk Cousins is a legitimate possibility, but there’s also the chance he could be leveraging the Falcons to force the Vikings to give him more money. Baker Mayfield could be a potential backup option, and of course, Justin Fields remains in the picture.

Then, there’s the NFL Draft. No matter what happens before the draft, one would think the Falcons will consider taking a quarterback come the end of April, but if they want one of the top four, it may take a significant move up the board.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, one general manager said it’s very possible quarterbacks go with the first four picks in the NFL Draft.

“I ran into Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon and was blown away by his support of Kyler Murray,” Russini writes. It’s very clear Murray is their guy. It’s always enjoyable to hear a coach sound like he’s in love with his quarterback. The Cardinals pick fourth in the draft, and some in the league believe they are open to trading back. Could we see four quarterbacks go with the top four picks? One general manager told me, ‘Absolutely!'”

J.J. McCarthy may be the most intriguing prospect when it comes to the Falcons this upcoming draft. Not only could he be an option when Atlanta is on the clock with the 8th pick, but if a team falls in love with him in the top three, it opens up the door for the Falcons to trade with the Cardinals, and land one of Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye, assuming Caleb Williams goes first overall to the Bears.

That once seemed like a pipe dream, but the buzz surrounding McCarthy is real following the NFL Combine. Whether it’s justified or not won’t be known for years, but NFL teams make questionable decisions this time of year all the time.
