Falcons defensive woes likely to continue in the absence of A.J. Terrell

The Falcons defensive woes could continue this week against the Giants as one of their top players is set to miss the game. Arthur Smith told the media on Friday that A.J. Terrell, the team’s top cover corner, will miss the afternoon matchup at MetLife Stadium. Terrell suffered a concussion in the second half of the Falcons Week 2 game with the Buccaneers, but not before he made two incredible plays, one being a touchdown-saving pass breakup.

The Falcons defense is ranked dead last in DVOA through two weeks, so losing what’s arguably been its best player could be detrimental. Fabian Moreau has been burned a few times, but he’s played respectably in my eyes. Opposite him, there lies a position to be filled. Jon Hoke, the Falcons secondary coach, commented on a possible Terrell replacement.

Green is someone I had making the 53-man roster for quite a long time. The reason being is his versatility in this defense, able to play safety and corner. He makes his most significant impact on special teams, but this week he will get his chance to prove he can start again in this league. Green hasn’t started an NFL game since 2017, but that hasn’t stopped this coaching staff from giving him an opportunity they say he’s earned.

New York has a bevy of capable pass catchers, which is more bad news for Atlanta. Darius Slayton and Sterling Sheperd are off to great starts, while the newly acquired Kenny Golladay is starting a bit slower. Unfortunately for Green, he’s hopping on a runaway train. The Falcons defense has shown no signs of life through the first two weeks of the season. I fully expect the team’s defensive woes to continue this Sunday against the Giants.
