Falcons: NFL insider says door is open for Kirk Cousins, Vikings extension

NFL: OCT 23 49ers at Vikings

The Falcons quarterback saga is scorching hot, but it’s still anybody’s best guess who will be under center in Atlanta this upcoming season.

Last week, Justin Fields seemed like the heavy favorite to be the Falcons next quarterback. That has since cooled down considerably, with one NFL insider even saying Fields may not even be a starting quarterback at all next season. This week, Kirk Cousins has been the popular name connected to the Falcons. The biggest NFL insiders in the game are all in agreement that the Vikings quarterback is at the top of the Falcons wish list, but ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is reporting Terry Fontenot may not even have a chance to court him.

Fowler said there’s still a chance that Minnesota and Kirk Cousins reach an extension before he hits free agency. He does say the Falcons have genuine interest, but that it will be a “budgetary decision.”

I’ve been cooler on the idea of Kirk Cousins joining the Falcons. Not because I wouldn’t like it — he’s the best option for Atlanta if they want to win in 2024, without question — but because I believe the Vikings really want to keep him, and when push comes to shove, I think they’ll give him what he wants to stay in Minnesota.

Fowler does say that he believes the Falcons will land one of Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, or Justin Fields. Which one? It won’t be much longer before Falcons fans have that answer.
