Falcons offense needs a spark, one could return this week

NFL: AUG 05 Atlanta Falcons Training Camp

The Falcons offense has been the weak point of the team thus far. In a turn of events, the defense has been the primary catalyst for the club’s two victories.

The offense was held in check for the most part against the Lions, only mustering six points and less than 200 yards total. The offensive line needs to play better; Arthur Smith needs to call a better game, and Desmond Ridder has things to work on.

They need a spark though, and it could be coming in Week 4 as the Falcons travel across the pond. Cordarrelle Patterson has yet to make his 2023 debut but is trending toward playing in London.

Arthur Smith updated Patterson’s injury status, telling the media that he was questionable for Week 3 but eventually was designated as out, even after Patterson told reporters that he was “very confident” he would play Sunday.

It was a similar story last week against the Packers. Patterson was practicing throughout the week, even earning the full participation designation, but overall health is more important to the team than one game.

It’s a long season, so it makes sense to play it safe with a 32-year-old, who has dealt with injuries since joining the Falcons much of his career. “I’m in Year 11, my body doesn’t heal like it did 11 years ago. Just trying to be smart. It’s a long season.”

His presence in the offense cannot be understated. Patterson forces defenses to account for him as a runner and receiver, similar to Bijan Robinson. It opens other things up, especially easier passes for Desmond Ridder. Cordarrelle Patterson’s infectious energy and explosive play style could be a catalyst for the rest of the team.

All of this is a moot point if the offensive line’s play doesn’t improve, though.
