In an interview with Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk, Sarah Spencer of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed the Hawks’ intentions are to get an extension worked out, starting the dialogue as early as next week.

“We’ve spoken with his agent,” Schlenk said. “We’re going to get into deeper dialogue next week. His agent wanted to wait a little bit and get all his free agents signed, before he went into extensions, less time-sensitive matters like the extension, but certainly his agent and Kevin are hoping to have that dialogue and certainly we are as well… Our intention is to try and get something done with Kevin, for sure.”

Jake Gordon said in June that Huerter deserved a new contract, and it’s hard to argue with Jake and Travis. Red Velvet has been everything Atlanta could have hoped for since selecting him 19th overall out of Maryland in the same draft that netted superstar Trae Young. His statistics may not blow anyone away after averaging just under 12 points on 43.2% shooting from the field, 36.3% from beyond the arc, and 78.1% at the line this season. Still, his presence coming off the bench is incredibly valuable.

K’Von has developed a deadly mid-range game that he put on full display against the Sixers, where he dropped a playoff career-high 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting in Game 7 against Philadelphia. He was also arguably the team’s best defender in the playoffs. This is a well-rounded 3-and-D wing that will hopefully be a piece of the Hawks for the foreseeable future.
