Multiple Falcons return to practice Thursday

The Falcons have suffered a plethora of injuries in recent weeks, but from Arthur Smith’s press conference yesterday, there is optimism that most of them will be able to return for Sunday’s pivotal matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

Yesterday, defensive tackle David Onyemata returned to practice after missing Week 14. Of all the absences, his is probably the most important, given Grady Jarrett is out for the season and Kentavius Street has already been ruled out for Sunday. Hopefully, things continue to trend in the right direction and he’s back on the field in Carolina. Jeff Okudah, Drew Dalman, and Nate Landman also returned to practice yesterday after missing last Sunday’s game as well.

Today, three more starters returned to practice in Chris Lindstrom, Jake Matthews, and Calais Campbell, who missed yesterday for veteran rest.

This is incredibly encouraging. Matthews and Lindstrom are the Falcons two best offensive linemen. Getting them back in the fold is pivotal against a menacing Panthers defensive front. Nate Landman also looks on track to play, solidifying the second level of the defense alongside Kaden Elliss.

Right now, it seems like the Falcons could be much closer to full strength than they were last Sunday. Street is out, but getting Onyemata back is a much bigger deal than Street’s absence. McGary also could miss another game, but in his place, Storm Norton has been serviceable over the last two games.

Things are trending in the right direction heading into a must-win Week 15 matchup. With a win, the Falcons could once again find themselves in first place in the NFC South. With a loss, it may be time to start thinking about 2024, and whether Arthur Smith is going to be a part of it.
