PFF gives the Falcons a favorable 2023 free agency grade

As expected, the Falcons have been very active in free agency. They’ve made some pretty solid moves, but they still have holes and some money to spend. PFF is a fan of what they’ve done so far:

I think the Falcons could have done a little more, but you can’t force guys to play for you. Here’s a snippet of what PFF had to say about Atlanta’s haul. I’d encourage you to read the full breakdown of each player:

ATLANTA FALCONS

• Additions: TE Jonnu Smith, DI David Onyemata, S Jessie Bates III, LB Kaden Elliss, QB Taylor Heinicke

• Re-signings: Edge Lorenzo Carter, G Chris Lindstrom, P Bradley Pinion, FB Keith Smith, T Kaleb McGary

PFF WAR GAINED: -0.955
PFF FREE AGENCY GRADE: B

I’d probably give the Falcons a bit higher of a grade, but I think a B is fair right now. Like myself, PFF is wary of the Jonnu Smith addition and the Heinicke deal, but at $14 million over two seasons, I don’t think Heinicke was a bad pickup. That’s about the going rate for a backup quarterback. Jonnu Smith is also restructuring his contract.

I don’t think the Falcons have done bad so far, but they need to do more to get an “A” from me. Thankfully, they still have some money and more time to make moves before the draft. This roster has a chance to look quite respectable in the coming months, something we haven’t said about the Falcons in five years.
