SEC Power Rankings ahead of Week 8

Georgia

This past weekend was a crazy one for the SEC. Most notably, Tennessee finally got over the hump and defeated Bama for the first time since 2006, but there were several other critical matchups with postseason implications. Mississippi State was upset by Kentucky, and LSU regained their footing with a big road win in The Swamp. Ole Miss also remained undefeated by beating Auburn. Here’s how I have the SEC stacking up ahead of Week 8.

  1. Georgia
  2. Tennessee
  3. Alabama
  4. Ole Miss
  5. LSU
  6. Kentucky
  7. Miss State
  8. Arkansas
  9. Texas A&M
  10. Florida
  11. South Carolina
  12. Missouri
  13. Auburn
  14. Vanderbilt

I saw a lot of people put Tennessee ahead of Georgia in their SEC Power Rankings, which is understandable. As far as impressive wins, they have the best resumé in the entire country thus far, but I still think Georgia is a superior team by a large margin. The line will represent that when those two teams meet in a few weeks.

Alabama drops to three, and they could fall even further down this list if they don’t bounce back with an encouraging performance at home against Mississippi State. Ole Miss and LSU will battle it out this weekend for the fourth spot in Baton Rouge.

You could shuffle up spots 7-11 in any way, and I wouldn’t have a complaint. Mississippi State looked like a contender a week ago, but an uninspiring loss to Kentucky halted the Bulldog hype train. Arkansas doesn’t have a pass defense. Texas A&M and Florida have been massive disappointments. Meanwhile, South Carolina has bounced back nicely since losing to Arkansas and Georgia convincingly. They have a critical matchup this weekend at home versus the Aggies.
