Michael Penix Jr. on potentially playing for the Falcons

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 02 Boise State Broncos at Washington

There’s a high likelihood the Falcons take a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. There’s also an even higher probability that none of the consensus top three prospects — Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or Jayden Daniels — is available when they are on the clock with the 8th overall pick.

That leaves the next crop of quarterbacks as potential targets, with Heisman Trophy runner up Michael Penix Jr. being the most intriguing. At the Reese’s Senior Bowl, our friend over at Fox 5 Miles Garrett got a clip of the former Washington quarterback discussing the possibility of him landing in Atlanta.

Among Falcons fans, Penix might be viewed as an attractive selection. He led a high-flying Huskies offense all the way to the National Championship, performing like one of the best quarterbacks in the country from start to finish.

However, among scouts, I imagine Penix will be the most polarizing prospect in the entire draft. Some will point to his highlight plays, where his arm strength sticks out with accuracy down the field. Others won’t be able to get past the fact that he’s a lefty that will be 24-years-old in a few months and has suffered multiple catastrophic injuries in college. They might not even decide to turn on the tape, which can also be polarizing due to his long throwing motion, inaccuracy on intermediate passes, and poor decision making at times.

I would be shocked if the Penix was in play for the Falcons with the 8th overall pick. Frankly, I would be a little surprised if he was taken in the first round at all. However, teams overdraft quarterbacks each year out of desperation, and this year will be no different. Penix is an intriguing option for the Falcons, but only if it is in the second or third round.
